Parliamentary Archives at York University

The Jean Augustine Fonds (Archives at York University)

In 2007 after her retirement from Parliament, Jean donated a special gift of historically significant items to the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections at York University Libraries in Toronto, Canada. This included her parliamentary chair, Speaker robes, official House of Commons portrait, photographs, commemorative items and gifts. It also included a collection of personal records and papers documenting her work as an elected representative, all of which will be archived in order to allow students and scholars to access for research purposes.

These materials chronicle Jean’s four decades of public service and advocacy on diverse issues, such as women’s rights, urban education, Black youth, and the betterment of the Black community. It will also seek to inspire others to aim high and contribute. More than a source of pride, York University is using the collection to illustrate the power of human will, engagement and education.
